British and American billionaires battle it out over London Casino
A Trans-Atlantic battle is going on over a London casino. Casino tycoon and owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation Sheldon Adelson put in a bid for Les Ambassadeurs casino, for £75 million.
The club is currently owned by Indonesian billionaire Putera Sampoerna, who purchased it two years ago.
Mr Adelson apparently thought the deal was in the bag, until Mike Ashley, owner of Newcastle United football club and a keen gambler himself, put in a higher bid for Les Ambassadeurs. He reportedly offered £95 million for the Park Lane casino, £20 million more than Sheldon Adelson – but still a vast £20 million less than Sampoerna originally paid for the venue. Apparently disillusioned with the state of gambling in the UK, which was affected by the smoking ban, and rising taxes, Sampoerna decided to sell, even at a loss.
Adelson is now furious that the British billionaire has pushed in front of him, claiming he had a verbal agreement with Sampoerna. Adelson is not afraid of the courts and is threatening to sue both the Indonesian owner and anyone else who tries to make a bid. Adelson, who owns the largest casino in the world, the Venetian in Macau, as well as a string of other casino resorts, is clearly used to getting his own way.
Mike Ashley is said to be withdrawing his bid, after being faced with legal action.
He had his own moment of casino glory earlier this week when he won £1.3 million on a single spin of the roulette wheel. Picking his lucky number 17, he surrounded it with a ‘complete’ bet, involving a line bet, bets on black, odd numbers, and numbers 1-18. When his number came up, a stunned crowd cheered wildly.
Les Ambassadeurs is a luxurious, exclusive casino club in London’s Park Lane. Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, is a regular member at the casino, which was once home to Leopold de Rothschild.
